As a countdown to New Year, the Seattle Storm is revisiting some of the most memorable moments of the 2017 campaign, starting with No. 10 on Dec. 22, all the way to the top moment of the season on Dec. 31.

 

MOMENT #2

Sue Bird and Breanna Stewart represent the Storm in the city of Seattle’s first-ever WNBA All-Star game on July 22.

 

WHY IT WAS SPECIAL

  • From the flag raising at the Space Needle to a special red-carpet event at the Chihuly Garden and Glasshouse, it was a special week for the city of Seattle in preparations for Verizon WNBA All-Star 2017 on July 22.

 

  • Bird was named an All-Star for the 10th time, matching Tamika Catchings for the most selections in league history. She also earned her eighth-career start.

 

  • Stewart reaped her first-career All-Star appearance. She led Seattle in scoring (19.9 PPG), rebounding (8.7 RPG), blocks (1.6 BPG) and minutes (32.9 MPG) in 2017. She was also good for second in the league in scoring and finished sixth in rebounding.

 

  • Bird and Stewart led the West to a 130-121 triumph over the East. Bird set an All-Star record for the most assists (11) in a single game, while Stewart tallied nine points and six rebounds in her All-Star debut.

 

  • Bird was one of six WNBA sharpshooters who competed in the Three-Point Contest during halftime. This was the league’s first long-range competition at WNBA All-Star in eight years.

 

  • During the 2017 season, Bird broke the WNBA record for career assists (2,610), surpassing Ticha Penicheiro (2,599). She also averaged a career-high 6.6 assists to go with 10.6 points per game.

 

  • While the East attempted a late comeback in the fourth, a 12-point West advantage proved too much to overcome. Bird buried a triple at the 4:05 mark to stretch the gap back to 11, and the West held on for the nine-point win. Maya Moore of Minnesota, who finished with 23 points, earned her second straight All-Star MVP award.

#9: Seattle defeats Los Angeles, the 2016 WNBA Champions, on July 8 by an 81-69 margin at KeyArena.

#8: Seattle breaks single-game field goal percentage record (61.5 percent) vs. Dallas on July 28.

#7: Jewell Loyd joins the 1,000-point club on May 21 vs. Washington, capping her third-straight game with 20 or more points to open 2017.

#6: Crystal Langhorne goes 9-for-9 vs. Atlanta on July 15, setting a franchise record for most makes without a miss; later scores her 4,000th-career point at Connecticut on Aug. 8.

#5: Sami Whitcomb scores 22 points in the second half vs. New York on May 26, directing the Storm to an 87-81 win and tying a WNBA record for three’s in a half with six.

#4: Seattle upsets top-ranked Minnesota, the soon-to-be WNBA champions, on Aug. 16 by a 62-61 count at KeyArena.

#3: Breanna Stewart becomes the fastest player in WNBA history to reach 1,000 points and 500 rebounds, doing it in just 55 games.

#2: Sue Bird and Breanna Stewart represent the Storm in the city of Seattle’s first-ever WNBA All-Star game on July 22.
