Storm’s Stewart Named Rookie of the Month presented by Samsung for Second Consecutive Time

NEW YORK, July 7, 2016Breanna Stewart of the Seattle Storm was named the WNBA Rookie of the Month presented by Samsung for games played in June. Stewart earned the honor for the second month in a row.

The WNBA Rookie of the Month and the Eastern and Western Conference Player of the Month awards are presented by Samsung and are part of the larger WNBA Performance Awards presented by Samsung program. This marks the third consecutive season that Samsung, an official WNBA marketing partner, will present the WNBA’s highest individual honors, including the WNBA Most Valuable Player, WNBA Most Improved Player, WNBA Sixth Woman of the Year, WNBA Defensive Player of the Year and WNBA Rookie of the Year.

In June, Stewart led all rookies in scoring (19.5 ppg), rebounding (9.5 rpg) and blocked shots (2.0 bpg) and ranked second in assists (3.6 apg) in 11 games. Among all WNBA players, she was first in rebounding, second in blocks, third in minutes played (34.4 mpg) and fifth in scoring.

The No. 1 pick in WNBA Draft 2016 presented by State Farm, Stewart scored at least 20 points in four consecutive games from June 16-28. The stretch included a career-high 38-point performance in an 84-81 victory against the Atlanta Dream on June 28, the third-highest total for a rookie in WNBA history.

For the season, Stewart leads the Storm in scoring (18.7 ppg, seventh in the WNBA) and rebounding (9.8 rpg, first in the league). Stewart also has seven double-doubles.

Highlights of Stewart’s month included:

  • June 16 at Dallas: Scored 29 points (on 8-for-11 shooting from the field), grabbed six rebounds and blocked four shots in an 88-79 loss.
  • June 24 vs. Connecticut: Recorded 29 points, including 5-of-8 shooting from three-point range, and added nine rebounds, six assists, three steals and three blocks in a 98-91 win.
  • June 28 vs. Atlanta: Posted a career-high 38 points (on 12-of-16 shooting from the field), six rebounds, three assists and three steals in an 84-81 win.
