Seattle Storm and Wunderman Thompson launch ad campaign

Campaign features Sue Bird, Breanna Stewart and Jewell Loyd; photo and video direction led by star photographer Jill Greenberg

SEATTLE — The Seattle Storm today launched its new advertising campaign for the 2022 WNBA season titled “Be the Storm” in partnership with ad agency Wunderman Thompson. The campaign was created by an all-female team from the Seattle chapter of the award-winning agency and shot and directed by the world-renowned fashion photographer Jill Greenberg.

The multifaceted ad campaign launches on April 25 with additional aspects rolling out throughout the season online and offline.

“Wunderman Thompson was a true creative partner. They were able to capture the essence of Storm basketball and some of our most iconic champions,” said Alisha Valavanis, Storm President and CEO. “This is an exciting time for our franchise as we return to downtown Seattle and Climate Pledge Arena after three years. We’re excited to see this dynamic campaign, hyping up the Storm season, all over the city.”

“It was important for the creative to be led by female voices who could bring out the power, talent and grace of this star-studded WNBA team,” said Guy Seese, Executive Creative Director of Wunderman Thompson Seattle.

The campaign features the Storm Big Three—Sue Bird, Breanna Stewart and Jewell Loyd—in photos and videos interspersed with green and yellow plumes representing the franchise’s colors. Backed by a rhapsodic soundtrack, the words, “We are power. We are purpose. We are champions. We are the Storm” cascade over each frame, representing the uniqueness and character of the team. Integral to the creative strategy was landing Greenberg, chosen for her ability to capture portraits.

Greenberg is an internationally renowned artist and photographer. Her work includes ad pieces for Emmy-winning shows Dexter, The Handmaid’s Tale and Orange is the New Black, cover photos for leading-circulation magazines Time, Weekly Entertainment and Condé Nast Portfolio, plus personalities such as Madonna, Amy Schumer, Bruno Mars and Will Smith.
