Seattle Storm Signs Mercedes Russell

Seattle waived 2018 WNBA Draft Third Round Draft Pick Teana Muldrow

SEATTLE – The Seattle Storm today announced the signing of 6-6 center Mercedes Russell. In addition, the team waived 2018 WNBA Draft third round selection (29th overall) Teana Muldrow.

Russell, a native of Springfield, Ore. was selected in the second round (22nd overall) by the New York Liberty in the 2018 WNBA Draft after a strong career the last five years at the University of Tennessee.

In two regular season games with the Liberty, Russell averaged 2.5 points and 1.5 rebounds in 16.2 minutes a contest.

At Tennessee, Russell was an All-American center, nearly averaging a double-double during her senior season at 15.3 points and 9.2 rebounds per game while shooting 58.3 percent from the field. In her career, Russell averaged 11.7 points and 8.0 rebounds per contest, while also becoming just the fifth player in program history to eclipse 1,500 points and 1,000 rebounds.

Who the Lady Vols’ coach Holly Warlick called “a point guard trapped in a post player’s body,” Russell was named First Team All-SEC in 2017-18, when she was also a finalist for the Lisa Leslie Award, recognizing the top center in the country. She was an Honorable Mention AP and WBCA All-American as a junior.
