Ginger Ackerley: 1938-2018

Dawn Trudeau on legacy left by Ginger Ackerley:

“Ginger Ackerley was the visionary behind getting professional women’s basketball to Seattle. Without her insight, drive and commitment we wouldn’t have the Seattle Storm in Seattle, wouldn’t have brought two world championships to Seattle, and wouldn’t have the chance to cheer on our hometown Sue Bird as she brought four Olympic medals home to the U.S.

Ginger was extremely dedicated to providing opportunities for women and girls to excel in leadership roles and was a role model in her own right. She was particularly invested in early learning for Washington kids. That’s why in 2009 the Storm created the Ginger Ackerley Community Service award. Ms. Ackerley was the first recipient, and in the years following we were able to continue to honor her by highlighting other outstanding women in the Puget Sound who focused their efforts on making the region a better place for all of us to live.

Ginger’s legacy will live on in the people who benefitted from her generosity and contributions to our community. The Storm joins others in honoring her memory and life.”
