Game Recap: Storm bounce back to beat Fever, 87-74
BRADENTON, Fla. — The Seattle Storm (12-3) got back to its winning ways, avenging last week’s loss to the Indiana Fever (5-9) with a 87-74 win Tuesday night.
Breanna Stewart led the Storm with 27 points and nine rebounds, with Natasha Howard scoring 13 points with nine rebounds and Alysha Clark and Sami Whitcomb rounding out the double-digit scorers with 11 points each.
“We were all not feeling good about that last game with them, we wanted to come out, play a little bit angry with a chip on our shoulder and try to get these guys the second time,” head coach Gary Kloppenburg said. “I was really pleased with the effort of our team, I thought our bench came in and did a really good job as well.”
Every Storm starter scored in the first quarter, with Clark leading the well-rounded attack with five points after one frame. Despite a strong scoring quarter, Seattle turned the ball over six times and found themselves trailing by one.
Led by Clark and Stewart, the Storm began to separate in the second quarter, going on a 13-0 run midway through the frame to take a firm lead. By halftime, the Storm were leading by 11, with the lockdown defense holding the Fever to less than 35% shooting and just 12 points in the second quarter.
Stewart led the way for the Storm at the break, scoring 14 points, followed by Clark also in double digits with 11 points.
Seattle’s defense kept up the pressure in the third quarter, moving the ball in transition and scoring easy buckets off of turnovers. The Storm held the Fever to just 39.1% shooting from the field with only eight made threes, holding on for a big double-digit win.
“I think my mindset coming into this game was really focusing defensively and trying to get some of our other people going and then at the same time I had a lot of mismatches on the block and being aggressive in the post,” Stewart said.
