NEW YORK The WNBA announced tonight Storm guard Sue Bird has been named to participate in her ninth-career WNBA All-Star game. Bird was selected by WNBA head coaches as a reserve on the Western Conference All-Star roster.

“I’m really looking forward to participating in this year’s All-Star game. It is an honor to represent the whole Storm organization, especially my teammates and coaches. Going back to Connecticut is always fun for me and I know we’ll put on a good show.”

On the season, Bird is averaging 10.1 points and 5.4 assists per game. She is coming off a July 18 game vs. Atlanta where she recorded 12 assists, two shy of her career high. Through July 20, she is leading the league in assists per game, and has dished out a total of 81 this season.

Bird’s ninth-career selection ties with former Storm forward Tina Thompson as second-most in WNBA history. Indiana Fever forward Tamika Catchings is slated to make her 10th-career WNBA All-Star appearance this year, being voted in by the fans as an Eastern Conference starter earlier this month. Bird made her All-Star debut as a rookie in 2002, and has been selected to participate in nine of the 10 All-Star Games played since she entered the league (she missed the 2013 season due to injury). Seven times she was voted in as a starter, and in 2014 she was added to the Western Conference squad by WNBA President Laurel J. Richie as an injury replacement for Seimone Augustus.
