Aussie Pride Connects Storm, NBA Finals
The NBA Finals has played to an increasing international stage for years and over the last couple of postseasons has been the emergence of some Australian stars.
San Antonio Spurs guard Patty Mills, who also plays for the Australian National Team, was a key component to his team’s run to the NBA championship last season. This year, there are two more Australians playing key roles in the NBA Finals in Golden State Warriors center Andrew Bogut and Cleveland Cavaliers guard Matthew Dellavedova.
Even the now-injured Kyrie Irving was born in Melbourne, Australia.
“Any attention we can get in Australia is huge for the game,” Bogut told Rappler.com. “We’ll have the whole of Australia watching. I’m hoping a lot of people will be on their laptops.”
That Australian connection reaches Seattle as the Storm has been home for Jenna O’Hea and Abby Bishop along with former MVP Lauren Jackson. O’Hea enters her fifth WNBA season and her second with the Storm and Bishop returns to the WNBA after spending the past five seasons in the WNBL in Australia.
So, who are they rooting for?
O’Hea, who went to the Australian Institute of Sport at the very end of Bogut’s time there, chats with him whenever they see each other but isn’t leaning to the 7-footer over the scrappy Dellavedova.
“For me, it doesn’t really matter who wins but it’s great to see an Australian win,” O’Hea said.
Australia has made an incredible impression on the sport of basketball and the pool of players coming over continues to grow. There are seven Australian players in the WNBA, more than any international country, and eight more in the NBA.
The notoriety continued on Sunday when Dellavedova took center stage as he helped to shut down MVP Stephen Curry and hit the game-winning free throws in overtime to even the NBA Finals at a game apiece.
When Game 3 of the NBA Finals tips off on Tuesday, the Storm will already be in action at Tulsa and there will be four Australian players on the court simultaneously in the WNBA and the NBA.
“We’ve got a lot more Australians in the NBA and the WNBA this year,” O’Hea said. “I think it is a credit to our development programs and it’s exciting to see.”
